Raphine is an unincorporated community in Rockbridge County in the Shenandoah Valley in the U.S. state of Virginia.
The name “Raphine” came from an dated Greek word “raphis”, meaning “to sew.”[citation needed] It was chosen in great compliment of James Edward Allen Gibbs (1829-1902), a local farmer who patented the first chain-stitch single-thread sewing machine upon June 2, 1857. In partnership taking into consideration James Wilcox, Gibbs became a principal in Wilcox & Gibbs Sewing Machine Company. Wilcox & Gibbs advertisement sewing machines are still made and used in the 21st century.
